You will be met at Boston Airport luggage pick up and transferred to our Boston Airport Hotel. We will need your flight schedule or alternative information about your arrival. This evening you meet your tour guides and enjoy an introductory discussion. Suggested reading in preparation for our Boston Tour: I Nephi 13, "April Morning" by Howard Fast.
SATURDAY 9/17: GUIDED TOUR OF BOSTON
Be on your assigned motor coach ready to explore the Boston area including Freedom Trail, historic burial grounds, Old South Church, State House symbols and site of Boston massacre, Old North Church, Copp's Hill, Bunker (Breed's) Hill, Lexington & Concord. Time is allowed for lunch and a bit of shopping at Quincy Market. We return to the same hotel for a second night.
SUNDAY 9/18: OLD SALEM, TOPSFIELD, TUNBRIDGE VERMONT
We travel northeast to the ancestral home area of the Smith Family who immigrated from England in the 1600's believing that they could live the pure gospel in a new land and proving that it can't be done without the Lord's direction. North to Tunbridge, Vermont where the prophet's parents met, married, and began their family. Our hotel is near Sharon VT.
MONDAY 9/19: SHARON, WITINGHAM VT
At Sharon, Vermont, two days before Christmas, the Smith family washed, dressed, and cuddled the future organizer of God's kingdom on the earth. We explore the birthplace of the fore ordained prophet, Joseph Smith, and see the obelisk that rises 38 ½ feet, one foot for each year of his short life. We can walk a bit in the surrounding hills and autumn colors to see where other members of the family lived. In southwest Vermont we visit Brigham Young's birthplace at Whitingham, then on to the Albany NY area for the night.
TUESDAY 9/20: COLESVILLE, HARMONY
Today we are on our way to the border between New York and Pennsylvania. Harmony on the Pennsylvania side was the home of Emma Hale's parents and became the home of Joseph and Emma Smith shortly after their marriage. Their first baby was born and died here. Much of the translation of the Book of Mormon, the restoration of the priesthood and other major events occurred in this place. The Church now owns this property and has preserved it well. On the New York side of the border is Colesville where the Church began to flourish, and faithful Saints assisted the prophet through a difficult time. We travel north toward Fayette for the night.
WEDNESDAY 9/21: FAYETTE, PORT BYRON, MENDON, PALMYRA
In 1830 the Prophet came to Fayette and stayed at the Peter Whitmer Farm to escape persecution and finish his translation work. The Church was officially organized in the reconstructed farm cabin. We make a stop in Port Byron on the Erie Canal where Brigham Young lived, married, and had his first child before he knew of the Prophet and the restoration. The house, recently purchased by the Young family, is still standing in good condition. We have special access. We talk of the vision seen in the evening sky by Brigham and simultaneously by Heber Kimball many miles away in Mendon. Later, they discovered it was the very night Joseph received the plates from Moroni at Hill Cumorah. In Mendon, we see the tavern where Samuel Smith delivered a Book of Mormon that began the conversion of the Young and Kimball families. We visit the cemetery where members of the Kimball family and Brigham's wife, Miriam, are buried. We settle in for two nights in our Palmyra area hotel.
THURSDAY 9/22: SMITH HOME AND CABIN, SACRED GROVE, HILL CUMORAH
The Smith home has been returned to the condition it would have been in when the Smith family lived there. The cabin where they lived when Joseph had his first interviews with Moroni has been reconstructed. We have individual quiet time in the Sacred Grove. From the top of Hill Cumorah, we talk of the sacred records that were concealed and protected here. We cross over the Erie Canal and see the Martin Harris farm, which was mortgaged to print the Book of Mormon. The original house is no longer there. We tour the Grandin Press Building where the Book of Mormon was published.
FRIDAY 9/23: NIAGARA FALLS (US SIDE), KIRTLAND, OH
On our way west1 we stop at Niagara Falls. It is not unlikely that the early Saints living in this area visited the spectacular falls, so we will too. At Buffalo we see where Lucy Mack Smith led a group from the Erie Canal to board a ship and cross Lake Erie to get to Ohio. We will drive around the giant lake, stop at Fairport Harbor where the ships landed just eight miles from Kirtland. We visit the Copley and Morley Farms to learn of their importance to the early Church. We stay our last two nights in a hotel near Kirtland.
SATURDAY 9/24: KIRTLAND, TEMPLE, HIRAM
Private funds from generous donors enabled extensive restoration work at Kirtland. We tour the Whitney Store and home where the Prophet found refuge from the escalating persecution in New York. The road has been rerouted and returned to its original unpaved condition. There is an excellent Visitor Center as well. We thank those who have preserved the first temple built in this dispensation at such great sacrifice by those faithful saints. It's a privilege to be able to climb its beautiful stairs and stand in the impressive rooms where Elijah restored the keys to the sealing powers. We travel to Hiram and the John Johnson Farm where many sacred revelations in the Doctrine and Covenants were given. This evening we have a farewell dinner together as a wonderful finish to our SUP Historic Trek. ·
