HISTORICAL PRESENTATION THE UTAH WAR (1857-1858
by Kenneth L. Alford, Ph.D, Professor Church History & Doctrine BYU, Colonel U. S. Army (retired)
Sometimes called Buchanan’s Blunder, the Utah War was an unnecessary, but fascinating, confrontation between the armed forces of the United States and members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

AMERICAN FORK HIGH SCHOOL MARCHING BAND PERFORMANCE
This award-winning marching band has been the Utah State Champions for the past 26 years. (Performance will be at the AFHS Stadium, 510 Caveman Dr., American Fork, Utah.)

FRIDAY EVENING SPEAKER

ELDER D. TODD CHRISTOFFERSON OF THE QUORUM OF THE TWELVE APOSTLES

At the time of his call to the Quorum of the Twelve, he was serving in the Presidency of the Seventy. During his tenure in the Presidency of the Seventy, Elder Christofferson had supervisory responsibility for the North America West, Northwest, and Southeast Areas of the Church. He also served as Executive Director of the Family and Church History Department. Earlier, he was president of the Mexico South Area of the Church, resident in Mexico City. Prior to his call to serve as a full-time General Authority of the Church, Elder Christofferson was associate general counsel of NationsBank Corporation (now Bank of America) in Charlotte, North Carolina. Previously, he was senior vice president and general counsel for Commerce Union Bank of Tennessee in Nashville where he was also active in community affairs and interfaith organizations. From 1975 to 1980, Elder Christofferson practiced law in Washington, D.C., after serving as a law clerk to U.S. District Judge John J. Sirica during the trials and other proceedings known as Watergate (1972-74).

Dr. Susan Easton Black was the first woman to teach at BYU and the first woman to receive the Karl G. Maeser Faculty Lecturer Award. She is the mother of three sons and author of dozens of books.

Angela Johnson, sculptor, Light of the World and Tree of Life
Angela Johnson’s fascinating journey in life is reflected in her magnificent work as a sculptor. The emotion, compositional flow, dramatic design and exquisite detail have become her signature elements.

TOUR 1

CAMP FLOYD - FORT CRITTENDE (Morning Only)

CAMP FLOYD, 18035 W 1540 N, Fairfield, UT
Come see a “live” reenactment of Johnston’s Army by the Utah Living History Association. Learn about the Pony Express and visit the Camp Floyd Cemetery.
The United States Army, Mormon Pioneers, Stagecoach Travelers, and the Pony Express met at Camp Floyd and the town of Fairfield. The Army arrived in 1858 and constructed Camp Floyd to suppress a supposed Mormon rebellion. The Army remained here for three years before being recalled for the Civil War. Today, Camp Floyd State Park features three structures and a cemetery. Visit the museum and Stagecoach Inn and learn about this nationally important historic site.

HISTORIC UTAH COUNTY COURTHOUSE, 51 S University Avenue, Provo, UT
The Provo City and County building, now called the His- toric Utah County Courthouse was built between 1920-1926 at a cost of $576,495.30.

PROVO CITY CENTER TEMPLE, 50 S University Avenue, Provo, UT
The first Provo Tabernacle was dedicated in 1867. Ground was broken for a larger tabernacle in 1882. Dedicated in 1898, the Provo Tabernacle served until 2010, when a fire gutted the building. Only the outer walls remained standing. Renovated as the 150th temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Provo City Center Temple is one of the most beautiful temples in the Church.

ROOTS OF KNOWLEDGE, 800 W University Parkway, Orem, UT (lot L6)
Roots of Knowledge in the Fulton Library, Bingham Gallery, at the Utah Valley University depicts the Tree of Life and the Tree of Knowledge and ends with the Tree of Hope for Humanity, handcrafted into 80 stained glass windowpanes, spanning 10 feet in height and 150 feet in length.

GEORGE A. SMITH PIONEER VILLAGE, 600 N 500 W, Provo, UT
Pioneer Village is an authentic representation of life in Provo before the railroad came in 1872.

HISTORIC BRIGHAM YOUNG ACADEMY, 550 N University Ave., Provo, UT
Completed in 1898, the Brigham Young Academy was used by BYU until 1968. Today, the newly renovated building is home to the Provo City Library.

See how The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints provides for those in need, recognizable by its 178-foot grain silo.Learn about the Gutenberg Press (1400’s), the English Common Press (1700’s) and the Peter Smith Hand Press, commonly known as the Acorn Hand Press (1800’s) the same press that printed the Book of Mormon.

DUP Relic Hall Museum, 50 North Main, Alpine
Even after an accident causes him to loose his leg, John Rowe Moyle continued on foot his weekly sojourn from Alpine to the Salt Lake City Temple until his death.

This museum features a unique display of native American artifacts, firearms of the old west, plus an excellent trib- ute to our military service men and women. See a 45 minute video on the life of Porter Rockwell, plus learn about David Evans, a Haun’s Mill survivor and founder of the city of Lehi.

Ponder the life of Jesus Christ, through a series of 15 sculptures by Angela Johnson, each depicting some of the most powerful moments of His ministry. Plus visit the new Tree of Life exhibit scheduled to open in the fall of 2024.

SOFT ROCK BUILDINGS MONUMENT, 105 E 100 S, Pleasant Grove, UT
National SUP, Area Vice President Dan Adams has written a research paper about Soft Rock Buildings. The pioneers who settled Pleasant Grove found a unique type of building rock northeast of town. Between 1865-1900 there were about 130 soft rock homes built in Pleasant Grove with only 19 historic buildings still visible.

The tour will continue to the Soft Rock Adams Dairy Barn where you will see hundreds of vintage farm tools and wit- ness the action of the original Adams Jackson Fork. Learn how 100 year old concrete silos were built.

TIMPANOGOS CAVE
Located 7 miles up American Fork Canyon, Timpano- gos Cave National Monument includes a striking cache of geological wonders. To reach the cave you must be willing and able to hike the physically demanding 1.5 mile trail that ascends 1,092 vertical feet up a steep mountain slope. Plan at least 3 hours to view this natural wonder of Utah County.
